Description
The Hope is a Grade II listed building, originally a small detached cottage from the 17th century, with a rear extension and a large side addition likely from the early 20th century. It is constructed of rubble stone and features a stone slate roof. The original building had stone end stacks, although the left stack has been modified to become a ridge stack, while there is also a stone lateral external stack with an offset to the left side. The structure forms an 'L' shape, with two storeys on the east side and a single storey with an attic at the rear.
The original section of the cottage has two windows with two-light stone mullions topped with square hoodmoulds, and below these are three-light stone mullions flanking a blocked original doorway. There are two very small windows to the left, indicating the position of a newel stair. The left wing features a plank door set in a stone surround with a square hoodmould, alongside a large three-light stone mullion window with a transom and leaded lights. The south face of this wing has a two-light stone mullion window on the first floor and a three-light window on the ground floor. The rear wing includes four hipped dormers on the south side and various scattered openings, some of which have timber lintels.
