Description
The former Board School, built between 1896 and 1897 by Sir Guy Dawber for the school board, is located on Oddington Road in Stow on the Wold. Constructed from coursed limestone with freestone dressings, it features Cotswold stone roofs, some of which have been partly replaced with plain tiles. The building has small louvred ventilators on the ridges and an ashlar lateral stack at the rear with a moulded cornice.
This single-storey structure is designed in the Domestic Revival style and consists of two parallel staggered classroom ranges, with a third range at right angles at the rear. The south front range showcases a tall three-light stone mullion-transom window at the center, topped with a segmental pedimented gable that has a ball finial. The gable ends also feature large stone mullion-transom windows with semi-circular relieving arches. The building has a tall plinth with chamfered weathering and metal casements with leaded panes.
On the left side of the back range, there is a moulded stone doorway architrave with a large keystone, inscribed with "Stow on the Wold United District Boys Board School 1896," above a curved pediment with ball finials. The entrance has a plank door with wrought-iron strap hinges. At the rear, there is a gable on the left with a large four-light stone mullion-transom window, and to the right, a flat roof window with an integral ashlar stack. Additionally, there is a 20th-century flat roof extension in the angle to the left of the gable.
The property also includes playground area railings made of stone walls with baluster-shaped piers, along with a gateway featuring a wrought-iron gate, stanchions, and an overthrow.
