Description

This is a 1935 K6 telephone kiosk designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, constructed to a standardised design in cast iron and painted red. It features long horizontal glazing in the door and sides, with applied (non-perforated) crowns on the top panels. Rectangular white display signs reading "TELEPHONE" are present beneath the shallow-curved roof. The interior contains modernised equipment.

The K6 kiosk is a significant example of 20th-century industrial design, developed by Scott in 1935 for the General Post Office to commemorate King George V’s Silver Jubilee. It evolved from Scott's earlier K2 design of 1924, which had Neoclassical influences. The K6 was a more streamlined, compact, and cost-effective design. Sir Giles Gilbert Scott (1880-1960) was a highly regarded British architect, responsible for buildings such as Liverpool Cathedral and Battersea Power Station. The K2 and K6 kiosks embody a careful adaptation of architectural principles to meet contemporary technological needs, with over 70,000 K6s eventually being produced.

The kiosk is situated in the centre of Stow on the Wold, possessing a strong visual relationship with the Grade II listed Toll Gate and 1 and 2 Mount Pleasant on the opposite side of the road.

The kiosk is designated at Grade II for its architectural and historic interest as an iconic example of industrial design showing Scott's adaptation of Neoclassical forms for a modern technological function, and for its group value, representing a good example of the type with close proximity and significant visual connection to other listed buildings.
