Description
The Nelson Inn is a public house located on Gloucester Street in Cirencester. It dates from the early to mid-19th century, with some elements from the 18th century. The building is constructed from coursed squared limestone and limestone rubble. The main part of the inn has a Welsh slate roof, which features a rebuilt brick stack at the left end, while a stone slate roof covers the wing that has a half-hip facing and a rendered ridge stack. To the right, there is a 20th-century wing with a concrete tile roof.
The main range, which faces the street, is three stories high with three windows. The first floor has two 2-light timber casements with glazing bars and a blind window in the center. The second floor has similar windows. On the ground floor, there is one 8/8-pane sash window to the left and a triple sash window to the right, which consists of one 4/4-pane and two 8/8-pane sections with timber mullions. The entrance features a part-glazed 20th-century door in the center. The building has a shallow plinth and quoins at the left and right angles.
To the right, the 18th-century building is a single-story structure with an attic and has one window. Its ground floor features a triple sash window similar to that of the main range, and above it is a 2-light fixed window set under an exposed timber lintel beneath the half-hip roof. The 20th-century extension to the left is also single-story and has two windows, which include two small top-hung lights, and a plank door with a glazed panel set deeply behind a round-headed opening to the right. The interior of the building has not been inspected.
