Description
This group of six monuments is located in the churchyard approximately 8 meters southeast of the chancel of the Church of St Peter in Southrop. Dating from the early to late 18th century, the monuments are made of limestone and consist of five chest tombs and one bale tomb.
The group includes one chest tomb featuring fluted pilasters and a moulded coping on top, inscribed to a person named Ready, who died in 1793. Another chest tomb has rounded corners and is inscribed to John Chaunler, Clerk MA, who died in 1739. There is also a chest tomb with fielded panels and a coped top, along with two tombs that have coffin-shaped copings. One of these is inscribed to John Chaunler, who died in 1709 and features symbols of death, while the other, dated 1718, has a figure holding an open book on the west end.
The bale tomb has a continuous frieze and carved ends, with a banded bale top that has shell hood ends, inscribed to members of the Ready family.
