Description
The Mill House, previously listed as Corn Mill, is a former mill that has been converted into a detached house. It dates from the early to mid-17th century and was transformed into a residence in 1966. The building is constructed of random rubble limestone with rubble chimneys and a stone slate roof. It is two stories tall with an attic and has an L-shaped plan, featuring various attached former outbuildings on the south side.
On the west end, there are 20th-century restored mullioned casements on each floor and two gabled dormers mounted at the eaves. The south side includes a projecting chimney and a gabled projection, likely for a staircase, with a ball finial at the gable. There are also two single-light recessed chamfered casements. An attached outbuilding encloses a small courtyard and features rubble chimneys, as well as various recessed chamfered mullioned casements with two and three lights, all lacking hoodmoulds. A 20th-century restored mullioned casement is present in a single-storey range running east, with the end section converted into a garage. The north side has ball finials on the gables, and most of the fenestration has been restored in the 20th century.
The interior was not inspected. The Mill House is situated by the mill stream at the east end of the village, creating a very picturesque composition. It was used as a corn mill around 1912 and later served to pump water to Southrop Manor.
