Description

This is a large garden gateway with flanking railings and piers, along with an adjoining summerhouse at the north end, located at the north-west corner of Hatherop Castle School. It was likely built between 1850 and 1856 as part of Henry Clutton's remodelling and extension of Hatherop Castle for Lord de Mauley. The structure is made of dressed stone and features a central large gateway surrounded by a row of spearhead iron railings, linked by six large square piers. Each pier has a moulded cornice and a stone ball finial topped with spearheads. The entire gateway is set on a low stone plinth with a moulded coping course.

The gateway itself has a rusticated arch with half-height twin pilasters that rise to form plain scrolled "consoles." The frieze includes plain triglyph blocks and a moulded cornice, which displays the de Mauley monogram in stone beneath a small pediment with flanking volutes and small obelisks supported on four balls.

The small summerhouse at the north end is a single-storey structure featuring a cornice, a tall blocking course, urn finials, and a partially glazed slate roof. Its stone fenestration is scattered, with mullions and transoms of varying sizes, some of which are partially blocked. The summerhouse cants out to the east and has an inserted four-centred stone arch on the south front.
