Description

Rissington Mill is a former corn mill and house, now used as a house. The current building likely dates from the mid-18th century and was extended in the 20th century. It is constructed of coursed squared and dressed limestone, topped with a stone slate roof and ashlar stacks. The building has a rectangular plan, with a 20th-century extension to the right and an earlier extension to the rear right.

It stands two storeys high with an attic, which is lit by three dormers that are hung with slate. The facade features four windows, with the milling area located at the left end. The ground floor has two 2-light casement windows with glazing bars set within plain wide stone architraves. The first floor of the former house section has three similar windows. There is a probable former pitching window, now glazed, with a timber lintel on the first floor of the milling area. The house part has a single-width 20th-century glass door with glazing bars and a plain architrave, along with French windows with glazing bars and a timber lintel to the left at ground floor level. To the left of the French windows is a small single-light window with leaded panes and a stone surround. The right side features a single-windowed extension with 3-light wooden casements that have glazing bars. There is also a single-storey extension at the rear right, which has been restored in the 20th century.

The main body of the building has axial and gable-end stacks with cappings and skirtings. Inside, some wooden gearing has been retained and restored at the ground and first floor levels, although the former undershot mill wheel is no longer present. An inscription reading 'Richard Lane, Carpenter, 1754' was noted in a previous listing description but is no longer traceable. The site has a historical significance as a mill since at least 1086, and the Bennett family operated it from 1548 to 1755. It was still functioning as a corn mill in 1881.
