Description

The Row is a group of four former cottages, originally five, located in Donnington Village. They date from the late 17th century to early 18th century, with possible construction in two phases, and include elements from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. The building is made of coursed squared and dressed limestone, topped with a stone slate roof and features ashlar stacks, some of which have been repaired in brick.

The main structure has a rectangular plan, with the late 17th to early 18th century part extended to the left in the 18th and 19th centuries. There are 2 storeys and an attic, which is illuminated by four roof dormers, one of which has a raking roof. The facade has five windows, featuring double-chamfered, stone-mullioned cross windows with stopped hoods and horizontal glazing bars from the late 17th to early 18th century. The 20th-century two-light casements are set within partially blocked 18th-century plain window surrounds that have keystones to the left of the main body.

The 19th-century extension on the left has a lower roof and is lit by a single two-light window that was inserted in a former doorway. The doors from left to right include a 20th-century plank door, a 20th-century stable door in a plain surround, a 20th-century four-panel door on the right in a segmental-headed surround, and a 20th-century plank door far right in a dressed surround. Each door is sheltered by a raking canopy supported on timber brackets. The gable-end coping is roll-moulded, with moulded kneelers and axial and gable-end stacks. The interiors have not been inspected.
