Description

Rapsgate Park is a large country house that originated in the late 17th century and was remodelled and enlarged in the 18th century, with alterations made in 1903. The exterior features roughcast render forming panels on the main facades, with ashlar quoins and window surrounds, and a stone slate roof. The central staircase hall is flanked by a room on one side, and the west range is two storeys high with an attic, forming an L-shape with the original 17th-century cross-passage plan. There is a service wing to the east and two small service room wings to the north.

The main west range has a five-window front, with two additional windows at the south end. All windows are cross-windows with recessed chamfers to the mullions and transoms, and there is a plain projecting drip moulding above the ground floor windows. The central doorway, which has a moulded stone architrave, is an alteration. The roof features three dormers with timber casements, the central dormer being slightly larger, and has a hipped roof. There is also a 20th-century hipped roof single-storey addition at the south end.

At the back of the main range, facing east, there is a staircase cross-window, and both the eaves-mounted ashlar chimney and the ridge-mounted chimney in the east wing have moulded caps and strings. The east wing has three windows, all cross-windows at the front, and three roof dormers. At the back, there is a 17th-century two-light recessed chamfered mullioned window with hood moulding, and the doorway of the small back service wing has chamfered stone jambs and a deep stone lintel. The main service wing now has cross-windows that match the others, added during the 1903 remodelling.

Inside, much of the interior dates from 1903, but a stone vaulted cellar from the 18th century survives in the west range. One room is fully panelled in apple wood. The house is situated in a prominent position overlooking a wooded valley.
