Description

The Fossebridge Inn is a building dating primarily from the late 18th century, with additions from the 19th century, and possibly incorporating earlier elements. The main part of the inn consists of two parallel ranges; the earlier, front range is late 18th century, and a rear range dates from the 19th century. A further range, prominently marked with the date 1858 on its gable, extends at a right angle from the right gable end of the front range. There are also minor extensions to the right-hand return of the front range.

The late 18th century front range is two storeys and has an attic. The 19th century range and the 1858 range are also two storeys high. The road-facing front of the late 18th century range has four windows, each a four-pane sash with a plain architrave. A four-panelled door, with the two upper panels now glazed, is positioned off-centre to the right and has a moulded architrave and a triangular pediment. A moulded eaves cornice with a band runs along the top of the elevation. The 19th century range has a four-window front with a 16-pane sash on the ground floor and a tripartite sash to the far right. The first floor has three 12-pane sashes. A fielded four-panelled door, with a four-pane hall light, is located off-centre to the left, accompanied by an ogee-arched boot scraper. The garden front on the rear range comprises six windows, each with a 12-pane sash and plain architraves. A four-panelled door leads to the garden, accessed by a flight of six stone steps with a simple cast iron railing. Axial and gable-end stacks are present, with one original ashlar stack and restored 20th-century stacks. A projecting stack is on the 1858 range. The interior has not been inspected. The inn was formerly known as the Lord Chedworths Arms.
