Description

The British Legion Club and Branch Library was founded in 1713 by Reverend Erasmus Saunders and was enlarged and largely rebuilt by Lord Northwick in 1826, as noted on an inscription. The building is two storeys high with a hipped roof, constructed from coursed rubble with ashlar quoins and dressings. Originally built as a village school, the north front features three bays, with the outer bays slightly angled back and a band over the ground floor. The central bay projects slightly and has an open pediment, which contains a lunette window with a flat bracketed label and a panel below inscribed in Latin. There are three doorways below, with the center being a double doorway. The first floor has an asymmetrical window to the right that appears to be contemporary with the 1826 alterations, while to the left is a window on the first floor and double doors below. To the right, there is a door on the first floor and a half-blocked window below.

The east side of the building features two wide bays with tripartite casement windows and a central doorway with an open pedimented stone porch, which serves as the entrance to the library. In 1867, part of the building was adapted to house the village fire engine until 1946.
