Description
Royal Oak Cottage, which adjoins the Royal Oak to the west, is likely originally several cottages that have been converted into an inn and a cottage. The building features painted rubble stone with a slate roof on the main section and a stone slate roof on the cottage and the projecting wing to the east. It has stone stacks with brick caps on the main section and brick stacks on the end wings. The structure is arranged in an 'L' shape, with the main section being a single storey with an attic, while the end wings are two storeys high.
The main section has two gables on the left, each featuring paired casement windows with timber lintels. The ground floor mirrors this arrangement, flanking a central small gabled porch that likely originally had a through passage. The right-hand end of the main part has a forward projecting gable and a lean-to with a stone slate roof supported by a coursed stone column. There is a doorway and a small casement window below the lean-to, both with timber lintels.
The cottage has two small paired casement windows on each floor, with a central projecting raking porch and a well head in the front garden. The eastern wing, which was formerly a shop, has two small paired casements on the first floor, a large double-width opening to the left on the ground floor, and a door with flanking side lights and a large timber lintel extending across to the right.
Inside, the main section features several large chamfered beams, and the fireplace below the main stack has been rebuilt.
