Description
Nos 21 and 22 in Market Place are a pair of cottages dating from the mid-17th century. They are constructed of rubble stone and feature two jettied timber-framed gables that are faced in roughcast. The cottages have a Cotswold stone slate roof and a dressed stone ridge stack on the left, which has a moulded cornice. The structure includes two projecting front gables and a rear cross range, with an additional long rear range attached to no 21. The cottages are two storeys high, and the gables are blind.
There are four windows in total: no 21 has two 4-pane sash windows, while no 22 has two 12-pane sash windows. The jetty of no 21 is supported by two thin columns with a wooden fascia above, whereas the jetty of no 22 has been filled in with a shop front that likely dates from the late 18th century. No 21 features a 20th-century shop front. Between the cottages, there is a passage that has a wide plank door on strap hinges, and at the far end of the passage, there is a chamfered depressed arch. Inside no 21, to the right, there is a small iron grille measuring approximately 200 by 25 cm in a wooden frame.
