Description

This listing describes a pair of almshouses, likely built in the late 19th century, located on Watermoor Road in Cirencester. The buildings are constructed from coursed squared limestone and feature a stone slate roof with coped verges that have trefoil stops at the apex. A shared ashlar ridge stack is positioned at the center, topped with square-section clay chimney pots from the 19th century.

The almshouses are two stories tall and consist of a two-window range. On the first floor, there are two 3-light chamfered stone mullion windows with hexagonal pattern leaded light casements. The ground floor features two canted bays, each with a plinth, containing four lights with chamfered stone mullion-and-transoms and hexagonal pattern leaded light casements. There are also two plank doors with Tudor-arched heads set in chamfered stone surrounds.

A verandah on the ground floor has a stone-slated roof supported by four square-section timber posts that have stone bases and bracketed tops. At the center of the first floor, there is a small ashlar panel with incised quatrefoil decoration. The building has flush quoins at the left and right angles.

Attached to the right side and front of the almshouses is a wall approximately 2 meters high, made of coursed squared limestone rubble with ashlar coping. This wall ramps down to about 1 meter high at the front, where it is topped by light railings made of round sections with shaped heads, similar dog bars, and three square-section posts with anthemion heads and curved backstays. To the left, there is a gate pier topped with a shallow pyramidal cap. The interiors of the buildings have not been inspected.
