Description

Bowly's Cottages are a group of almshouses built in 1924 by N Jewson, located on Watermoor Road in Cirencester. The building is constructed from coursed limestone rubble and features a stone slate roof with coped verges, along with four ashlar stacks at the ridge and ends. This range consists of six almshouses, each with a single bay, and the central gable is slightly projected forward.

The structure is two stories high and has seven windows across its front. On the first floor, there are six three-light stone mullion windows with hexagonal pattern leaded light casements, along with a similar two-light window in the center that has a drip stone above. The ground floor features six canted bays, each topped with stone-slated roofs and chamfered plinths. These bays contain four-light windows with chamfered stone mullions and transoms, also with hexagonal pattern leaded lights. There are six plank doors with applied mouldings and Tudor-arched heads set in chamfered stone surrounds. In the center, there is a round-headed opening leading to a passage at the back, framed by a chamfered stone surround.

On the first floor, there are small recessed ashlar panels on the left and right, each adorned with carved Tudor roses in the corners. Above the ground floor center, there is an ashlar panel featuring a decorative border and relief lettering that reads: "THESE ALMSHOUSES WERE BUILT/ IN 1924 AT THE SPECIAL DESIRE/ OF MR CHRISTOPHER BOWLY OF/ CIRENCESTER BORN 1837 DIED 1922." The building also has a small two-sided oriel feature with round-headed openings in the gable, and a timber cupola with a rendered base, which includes a panel with relief lettering "CB" and a lead roof topped with a ball finial and a wrought-iron weather vane shaped like a cock. The left and right angles of the main range and the gabled projection are finished with flush quoins. The interiors have not been inspected.
