Description
Nos. 7, 9, and 11 Querns Lane are almshouses built in the late 18th century or early 19th century, with later alterations. The front is made of coursed squared limestone, while the sides and rear are constructed from coursed squared limestone rubble. The building features a stone slate roof and has four rebuilt brick stacks at the ridge and ends. It is a two-storey structure with an eight-window range.
On the first floor, there are six 2-light glazing bar casements, some with old glass, set in plain reveals with flat arch lintels and stone cills, along with two similar blind windows. The ground floor has six matching 2-light casements and six plank doors in plain reveals, three of which are currently in use. The building has a shallow plinth and flush quoins at the left and right angles.
At the center of the first floor, there is a recessed ashlar panel with incised lettering that reads: "These six houses were endowed by Robert Brewin in memory of his wife Mary H Brewin died September 10 1883." There are 20th-century extensions to the rear made of reconstituted stone. The interiors have not been inspected.
