Description

Two houses, dating from the early 18th century with alterations in the later 18th century. The front is rendered with stucco, and the roof is covered with concrete tiles. A shared stack is built from reconstituted stone at the rear. The houses are two storeys with an attic and a cellar, and have a three-window front. The first floor has three 2-light iron windows, likely dating from the 18th or early 19th century, with leaded lights – casements on the centre and right (Nos. 72 and 74), and a fixed window on the left (No.74). These windows are set within moulded architraves, featuring splayed reveals and sloping timber sills. The ground floor also has two similar 2-light casements. The doors are 20th-century replacements, with a half-glazed design with a single-pane overlight to the right (No.72), and a six-panel door with the upper two panels glazed and a two-pane overlight to the left (No.74). There are two hipped dormers, each with a 2-light leaded casement. The two cellar openings have cast iron panels with 5 x 3-pane glazing, with louvres in the top five panes. A plinth with a moulded top is present, and there is a coved eaves cornice. Gabled wings extend to the rear, each featuring a 2-light leaded window in the gable. The rear wing of No.74 has two 6/6-pane sashes in flat, unmoulded surrounds to the first floor, and one similar window in a plain reveal to the ground floor. The rear wing of No.72 has a 6/6-pane sash in a plain reveal with a segmental-headed arched lintel. The interiors were not inspected. The group value of the buildings lies in their contribution to the character of Cricklade Street.
