Description
Milton's Well, located about 125 yards north of Eyford Lodge, is a well-head and parapet wall that was restored and embellished in 1885 by Mrs. Somerset d'Arcy Irvine. The well head is wide and hexagonal, while the northeast parapet wall stands about 5 feet high and features a tablet inscribed with an illegible extract from "Paradise Lost" along with details of the restoration. It is believed by Mrs. Somerset d'Arcy Irvine to mark the spot where John Milton sat to write "Paradise Lost." The setting is designed to be romantic, with flanking yew trees and box shrubs.
