Description

The Headmaster's House at Dowdeswell Court is a former coach house, stabling, and residence built in the 19th century. It is constructed of ashlar stone with a slate roof and an artificial stone stack, featuring a 'U'-shaped plan. There are 20th-century extensions at the rear, one on the right and a flat-roofed extension on the left, which are not of special interest. The building is two stories high and has a window arrangement of 1:3:1, with six-pane sash windows on the first floor and mostly twelve-pane sashes on the ground floor, all with horns on the first-floor windows. The right and left bays project slightly from the facade and are accented with rusticated quoins and a triangular pediment at the parapet level. The ground floor windows between the pedimented bays have moulded architraves, and pilasters and quarter pilasters flank the windows of the central three bays. There are two blocked carriage arches in the rear wall of the main body and a blocked entrance on the rear left, also with rusticated quoins. The interior has not been inspected.
