Description

The cascade and associated pool and steps, built around 1860 for James Hutchinson, are located approximately 70 meters southeast of Cowley Manor. The cascade features ashlar stone alternating with bands of coursed squared and dressed limestone, and was in the process of restoration with limestone rubble at the time of the resurvey in January 1987. The pool and steps are made of dressed limestone.

The design includes a cascade with steps descending from the upper level on either side, leading to a circular pool with a central fountain and additional flights of steps. The cascade consists of a retaining wall about 20 meters long and 6 meters deep, topped with a low parapet wall. Pilasters with banded rustication are spaced regularly along the wall, and grotesque bearded heads are positioned between the pilasters, from which water flows from the lake above. The central head directs water into a horizontally set shell, which then falls into a rectangular pool featuring two quadrant walls that incorporate four pedestals, with two eagle statuettes on the east side.

A flight of shallow steps leads down to a circular pool, which is surrounded by eight pedestals with lion statuettes at intervals. A small fountain is located at the center of the pool, and there is a shallow flight of steps descending towards the lower lake, aligning with a squat marble column that has a limestone upper part, possibly intended as the base for a sundial.
