Description

Cecily Hill House is a mid-18th century house with later alterations, located on the north side of Cecily Hill in Cirencester. The building is constructed from coursed squared limestone rubble and features a hipped stone slate roof. At the rear, there are two stone lateral stacks on gablets. The front of the house is designed in the Palladian style, with a pedimented center and a 19th-century extension at the back.

The house has three stories and a five-window range. The first floor has five 6/6-pane sash windows in plain reveals, while the second floor features five similar 3/3-pane sashes. The ground floor has four matching sashes with stone cills. The entrance includes a six-panel door with a three-pane overlight, set within an eared architrave topped with a heavy keystone. Rusticated quoins are present at the left and right angles of the ground floor, along with a plat band above it. Cill bands on the first and second floors project forward beneath each window. The building is capped with a modillion cornice and a shallow pediment that extends forward over the central three-window section. There is a lead-covered blocking course at the top.

The interior has been significantly altered, but it retains a mid-18th century staircase with later modifications. The room at the rear left on the first floor features an early to mid-19th century chimneypiece and cornice, while the basement left room has two beams with small chamfers. The quality of the exterior masonry and the projection of the ashlar mouldings suggest that the house was originally intended to be rendered.

To the right of the house, there is an attached wall approximately 1.5 to 2 meters high, made of coursed squared limestone with a limestone coping. This wall ramps up to form gate piers topped with ball finials at the center, which support a pair of 20th-century timber gates. The wall and gate piers were listed separately on July 23, 1971.
