Description
This description covers a pair of chest tombs located about 2.5 meters southeast of the Gearing Monument in the churchyard of the Church of St. Lawrence. The northern tomb commemorates William Hobbs, who died in 1803, and the southern tomb commemorates Elizabeth Hobbs, who died in 1812. Both tombs are made of limestone.
The northern tomb features a flat top with straight edges and a moulded plinth, with cut-off corners and plain ends and sides. It has remains of a low relief cartouche surrounding the inscription on the north side, although the inscriptions are mostly worn away. The top of this tomb has been pieced together and has shifted position.
The southern tomb has a moulded plinth and capping on a tall base with a plain frieze. Its three-stepped tent top has curved edges that transition to straight edges. The end panels display an incised rectangular panel with a projecting semi-circular section at the top, while the fielded side panels are flanked by fluted strips.
