Description

This group of five monuments is located about 4.5 meters south of the southeast corner of the south transept in the churchyard of the Church of St Mary the Virgin in Maiseyhampton. The group includes two chest tombs to the east and three headstones to the west, all made of limestone.

The southern chest tomb is dedicated to Henry Lane, who died in 1820. It features a moulded plinth and capping on a tall double base, with a plain frieze. The ends are plain with incised moulding, and reeded side strips turn the corners to form reeded pilasters flanking raised side panels with low relief decoration on the south side and a fielded panel on the north. The tomb has a three-step tent top.

The northern chest tomb is unidentified and dates to 1797. It has a moulded plinth and capping, with a plain frieze. There is a cartouche on the west end, a plain east end, and a low relief surround on the sides with an inscription on the north side. The small bale top has panelled decoration and fluted concave ends.

The three headstones, from left to right, include: 1) a plain small stone inscribed "JE 1775 / EE 1780"; 2) a slightly larger stone featuring a central cherub head, an hourglass to the right, and a device, likely a book, to the left, with the inscription now obliterated, probably dating from the late 18th century; and 3) a large stone topped with a winged cherub and an elaborate low relief surround, with an indecipherable inscription, likely from the mid to late 18th century.
