Description

This barn, dating from the 17th century, is located approximately 50 meters north of The Manor House in Withington Village. It is constructed from limestone rubble and features a corrugated-iron roof, with a concrete tile roof on a small extension. The barn has a cross-shaped plan with projecting porches on the north and south sides towards the west end. Attached to the barn on the south are late 19th to 20th-century farm buildings, which are not of special interest.

The north porch has been reduced in height and includes a raking roof, a ventilation slit, and two blocked doors, with a former gabled pitching window to the right. The south porch is gabled and has a weather-boarded gable with a single-width door in the right-hand wall. There is an early plank door with a timber lintel towards the east gable end, and ventilation slits are present in both gable ends.

Inside, the barn has eight bays and features one complete upper cruck truss with queen struts extending from the collar to the junction of the collar and principal rafter. There are two further cruck trusses, which have been truncated at the bottom, flanking the porch bay. East of the entrance bay, there are two collar beams with queen struts from the lower collar, while west of the entrance bay, there are two trusses with a tie beam and two collars.
