Description

Poplars Farmhouse is a former farmhouse that has been converted into a detached house. It dates from the early 17th century and was refaced in the 19th century, with extensions added in the 20th century. The building is constructed from coursed squared and dressed limestone, topped with a thin stone slate roof and features ashlar stacks. It has an L-shaped plan, with a former outbuilding now serving as a garage attached to the right gable end, and a 20th-century extension at the rear left.

The facade is symmetrical, two stories high, and has four windows. It is illuminated by two and three-light hollow-chamfered stone-mullioned casements that have stilted heads, carved spandrels, stopped hoods, and leaded panes. There is a 19th-century plank door located off centre to the left, which also has a stopped hood above it. A three-light ovolo-chamfered window is present in the left gable end. The gable ends feature flat coping with gable-end stacks and axial stacks that have moulded cappings.

Inside, the main body of the house has a three-room plan. It includes two 'Tudor'-arched fireplaces, one of which has been moved from upstairs and features chamfered 'bulging-bag' stops. There is also an open fireplace with a wooden bressumer. The spine beam has stepped stops, and similar stops are found at the ends of the floor joists. The building is marked as Martlet House on the 6-inch Ordnance Survey map.
