Description
The South African War Memorial at the entrance to Cheltenham College is a war memorial built around 1902, designed in the Perpendicular Gothic style. It features a three-stage octagonal structure, with the second stage showcasing open arcades, buttresses, and crocketed pinnacles. The upper stage is a lantern adorned with miniature flying-buttresses at the base of the drum, along with buttresses and crocketed pinnacles. It includes barred arched windows and an ogee capping topped with a poppyhead. Both the upper and second stages have arcades with crocketed drip-moulds. The lower stage is elevated on four wide steps and has a high plinth with bronze memorial tablets affixed to each face.
