Description

66, 68, and 70 Promenade is a house that has been converted into two shops, built around 1820 to 1840 with later additions and alterations, including the conversion to shops likely occurring before 1845. The shop fronts were updated in the 1980s. The building features stucco over brick with a hipped slate roof and a stucco stack on the right end.

The exterior is two storeys high with six first-floor windows, two for each house, and additional ranges at the rear. Notable stucco detailing includes Doric pilasters at the ends and between the windows, along with wide eaves. The windows on the first floor are replacement 1/1 sashes set in plain reveals with tooled architraves, with three on the right being taller and having sills. The ground floor has glazed shop fronts with glazed doors. On the right return, there are three first-floor windows and two second-floor windows, all of which are 6/6 sashes.

The interior has not been inspected. Historically, the Promenade was established in 1818 as a tree-lined avenue leading from the Colonnade in the High Street to the Sherborne Spa. By 1826, it had become a carriage drive with spacious gravelled walks on each side. Originally lined with elegant houses, by 1845, as noted by Rowe in his Cheltenham Guide, the southeast side was largely occupied by professional or business establishments.
