Description

A terrace of three houses, now offices and a shop, was built around 1820 to 1850. Later alterations were made to the ground floor of the right-hand property. The buildings are constructed of stucco over brick, with a concealed roof and end and party-wall stacks. They are accompanied by attached area railings.

The plan is double depth with side hallways. The exterior has three storeys over a basement and nine first-floor windows. Stucco detailing includes rustication to the ground floor, a band above the ground floor, Greek key motifs carved into the first-floor windows, a frieze and cornice above the first floor, and a crowning frieze, cornice and blocking course. The original windows are 6/6 sash windows in plain reveals with sills. Some second-floor windows are blind. A 20th-century bow window with multi-pane glazing has been added to the ground floor on the right.

The left-hand entrances have renewed steps leading to five-panel doors set in panelled reveals, each with a cambered overlight. The overlight to the left has a batwing and circle motif in the glazing bars, while the one to the right has an inverted teardrop and central circle. Two doorways to the left have voussoirs to their heads, and the right-hand doorway is set within a Doric porch with an entablature and blocking course.

Inside No.20, a dogleg staircase remains, featuring stick balusters and a wreathed handrail. There are also simple cornices, some with fleurons. The interior of the other properties was not inspected.

The attached area railings are arrowhead-shaped with urn finials atop the stanchions. Regent Street was originally comprised of houses, boarding houses, and hotels.
