Description

No. 72 Promenade is a terraced house that has been converted into a shop. It was built around 1820 to 1840, with later alterations, including the shop conversion likely occurring before 1845 and a shop front added in the 1980s. The building features stucco over brick, a concealed roof, and a stack at the right end.

It stands two storeys high with an attic and has three windows on the first floor, along with a three-window service range at the rear. The first floor has two windows on the right that project slightly forward, featuring a first-floor band and a tooled sill band. There is a continuous entablature above the first floor, a cornice over the second floor, and a blocking course with copings. The first floor windows are 6/6 sashes, while the second floor has 2/2 horizontal-pane sashes. The ground floor has a late 20th-century glazed shop front and entrance.

On the left side, there are four first-floor windows: three 1/1 sashes and one blind opening, with a 1/1 sash in the attic. The entrance on the left return is a six-panel door with an overlight that includes margin-lights.

The Promenade was established in 1818 as a tree-lined avenue leading from the Colonnade in the High Street to the Sherborne Spa, which is now the site of the Queen's Hotel. By 1826, it had become a carriage drive with spacious gravelled walks on either side. Originally lined with elegant houses, by 1845, much of the southeast side was occupied by professional or business establishments, as noted by Rowe in his Cheltenham Guide published in 1850. The building occupies a corner site with Little Promenade.
