Description
This property comprises three houses, now shops at 60, 62, and 64 The Promenade, Cheltenham. Constructed around 1820-1840, it has undergone later additions and alterations which likely included conversion to shops before 1845. The exterior is stucco over brick, topped by a hipped slate roof and renewed tall, stucco end stacks.
Architecturally, the building is two storeys with four first-floor windows. The stucco detailing includes round-arched architraves to the first floor with modillion moulding, and taller, wider round arches with egg-and-dart moulding, as well as paterae between the arches. A modillion frieze and cornice are also present. The windows are casements with fanlights to the left and 1/1 lugged sash windows to the right. The ground floor features glazed shop fronts dating from the 1980s. A balcony with a replacement balustrade is also present. The interior remains uninspected.
The Promenade itself was established in 1818 as a tree-lined avenue, which by 1826 was a carriage drive with gravel walkways, originally flanked by elegant houses. By 1845, much of the southeast side, including this property, had become dedicated to professional and business establishments. The stucco detailing represents an inventive choice, enhancing a conventional Neo-Classical design.
