Description

Railings, walls, gates, and gate piers, dating to approximately 1831, serve the Church of St Paul. The layout is a ā€˜U’ shape. To the front, a symmetrical arrangement features outer gate piers and pedestrian gates between the piers, with a double gate set and railings extending approximately 14 metres. A low brick wall with railings runs for about 8 metres to the right return and approximately 30 metres to the left return. The railings are cast iron, the outer piers are ashlar, and the walls are built of pinkish-brown brick. The square-plan outer piers have moulded caps. The lotus-head railings ramp up to circular-plan gate piers that are themselves made of ironwork. Both the double gates and the pedestrian gates are also lotus-head design. The railings extend westwards towards Hanover Street as far as the portico and eastwards for about 10 metres. These features form a significant element of the streetscape along St Paul's Road and Hanover Street.
