Description

The gate piers, gates, and boundary wall of Charlton Park were built around 1826 to 1827, while the gates and gate piers date from 1736 to 1748 and were relocated in the 20th century. The structure features rusticated ashlar piers with moulded capping and urn-finials. It includes wide timber carriage gates and flanking pedestrian gates designed in the Chinese Chippendale style. The quadrant screen walls end with additional rusticated ashlar piers that have moulded capping and eagle-in-crown finials. The dry stone boundary walls are approximately 2 meters high, extending from Moorend Road almost to Cudnall Bridge. The eagle gates and gate piers are depicted in Robins's painting from around 1748, originally located on the Old Bath Road. They were moved to the public road on the east side of the house around 1784 and to their current position in 1940. This feature is a significant part of the streetscape and contributes to the setting of Charlton Park.
