Description

This listing describes a row of three chest tombs located in the churchyard of the Church of St Lawrence, approximately 2.5 meters east of the east end of the chancel. The tombs date from the 17th to early 18th century and are made of limestone.

The northernmost tomb, dating to the 18th century, features an inscription dedicated to John Cobb, Gent, on the north side within a fielded inscription panel bordered by carved foliate decoration. The south side has a similar fielded panel. At the west end, there is a circular panel with a raised margin and gadrooning at the base. The tomb is capped with a thick top that has a moulded margin, and an egg and dart motif runs around all sides below the capping.

The second chest tomb, located about 2.5 meters south of the first, dates from the early to mid-18th century. It has a partially legible inscription on the south side, featuring a sunken inscription panel flanked by raised strapwork panels. The end of this tomb also has similar raised strapwork.

The southernmost tomb dates to the early 17th century and has deeply incised inscriptions on the north side and at the west end. The south side appears to have some raised decoration, though it may not be an inscription. All three tombs were largely covered in ivy at the time of the last survey in April 1986, and there may be additional inscriptions that were not visible then.
