Description
Regent Cottage, originally stables and a carriage house, was built around 1825 by the architect J.B. Papworth for Pearson Thompson. It is located on Vittoria Walk in Cheltenham and forms part of a cohesive architectural group with Regent House, Montpellier Drive, and associated boundary walls and railings. The building is constructed of pinkish-brown brick with a hipped slate roof and is U-shaped on its plan. The exterior features two storeys and three first-floor windows, with casement windows throughout. The central ground-floor window is segmentally arched, and double plank doors are present to the centre and left, although largely concealed by a later addition which is not included in the listing. The interior has not been inspected. A boundary wall, approximately 2 metres high and 10 metres long, with stone copings, runs alongside the cottage, adjoined by two irregularly bonded ashlar panelled gate piers. These piers sit on plinths and feature a frieze with a lozenge motif, a cornice, and moulded caps. Regent House was designed by Papworth for Thompson as Thompson's home, and this carriage house represents an important, surviving example associated with one of Cheltenham’s early villas and contributes significantly to the streetscape.
