Description
The Wager tomb chest and four headstones are located 5 to 10 meters north of the northwest corner of the Church of St Mary in Charlton Kings. The tomb chest commemorates Richard Wager, who died in 1661, and is a tea-caddy type made of stone, featuring a rectangular shape with heavy capping. An inscription can be found at the west end, and a note on the north side indicates repairs were made by C Higgs in 1871. The tomb chest has fielded panels on the sides and a shaped top.
The group includes four headstones dating from around 1676 to 1735, with one headstone approximately 5 meters north of the others. One headstone features a double scroll at the top, while two others have cartouches with scrolled surrounds. One cartouche depicts two cherubs holding drapery, though the inscriptions on these headstones are eroded. Another headstone is topped with a central cherub's head between scrolls, commemorating a deceased individual from 1699.
