Description
Brevels Haye is a house located in Charlton Kings, dating from the 16th century, with a stack added around 1610. The building has undergone several additions and alterations in the 18th and 19th centuries, including work done around 1710, 1776-1799, and 1836-1877, as well as modifications in the 20th century, which included raising the roof. The exterior is rendered and features a renewed slate roof.
The house is two storeys high with three first-floor windows. The central doorway consists of a 20th-century plank door with a renewed open hood. Throughout the building, there are 20th-century casement windows. To the left, there is a large external stack with a detached shaft, and a lean-to bread oven adjoins this section.
Inside, the west (left) room contains an inglenook fireplace with a chamfered bressumer beam and a bread oven. A tie-beam with a tongue stop rests on an exposed post. The east (right) ground-floor room features a rough-hewn beam, and a small amount of square timber framing is exposed on the ground floor. The first floor has exposed purlins, and the 17th-century roof was revealed in 1984, having been raised in the 19th century. The west room is reputed to have a chimney shelf with gears for a roasting spit or jack, complete with a brass casing and a flywheel signed 'Edw. May of Whitney'.
Historically, the house was originally thatched, but the slate roof replaced stone tiles around 1920. A second stack, which was added around 1710, has since been removed.
