Description
Pillar House is a semi-detached villa, now used as offices, built around 1810 to 1840, with a rear extension added in the 1980s that is not included in the listing. The building features ashlar stonework over brick and has a hipped slate roof, along with a stuccoed party-wall stack. It has a double depth plan and stands two storeys tall. The façade has a 1:2:1 arrangement of first-floor windows.
At the ground floor, the end porches project forward, and there is a tetrastyle Ionic loggia between them, topped by a continuous low balustrade with sunk panels over the entrances, which feature vase balusters. The entrances are similar, with three roll-edged steps leading up to renewed six-panel doors that have fanlights with radial glazing bars set in stepped reveals, flanked by pilaster strips with sunk panels. The wall behind the loggia has horizontal rustication, and there are two tripartite windows with tall 6/6 sashes between 2/2 sashes, all in plain reveals with sills and cornices on console brackets.
On the first floor, the bays over the porches are set back and contain 6/6 sash windows. The central section has pilasters at the ends and a sunk panel inscribed 'PILLAR HOUSE', along with two tripartite windows featuring 6/6 sashes between 2/2 sashes in plain reveals with cornices on console brackets. The returns of the building also have 6/6 sash windows. The interior has not been inspected. Pillar House is a notable example of a semi-detached villa with a distinctive Ionic colonnade and is grouped with No. 138 Thirlestaine House.
