Description

Hatherley Court is a house, dating from approximately 1820 to 1850. It is constructed of ashlar stone over brick, with stucco to the rear, and the roof is concealed. The house has two storeys and a basement, originally with seven windows on the first floor, arranged in a 2:3:2 pattern. The central three windows are set back behind a porte-cochere on the ground floor, with two projecting two-storey, two-window blocks to the left. A first-floor band, continuous sill band, cornice, and blocking course run along the exterior. The windows are mostly 6/6 sashes, taller on the ground floor and with aprons. The porte-cochere has three round-arched openings, two with casements featuring fanlights, and a four-panel round-arched entrance door to the right, featuring imposts, keystones, and a tooled arch over the head, finished with a cornice and low parapet. The side elevation is similarly styled, with a three:two window arrangement, the right-hand part projecting slightly. To the left, the ground floor windows are 6/6 sashes, while those on the first floor are 3/6 sashes, with a cornice and blocking course. The right return has five first-floor windows with matching fenestration. At the rear, the windows are mostly 6/6 sashes in tooled architraves. Some ground-floor windows are taller 9/9 sashes in tooled architraves, and the staircase window is a 9/9 sash with radial glazing to the head. It is reported that the interior retains original features, including a fine marble chimney piece with sculpted female figures on the jambs, and panelled shutters to the windows. The building is a prominent feature of the surrounding open space.
