Description
Rose Gate is a garden gate from the 1920s, attributed to the Arts and Crafts architect and craftsman Norman Jewson. It is made of cast and wrought iron and is located within the yew hedge between the south and east garden.
The rectangular pedestrian gate is set within a decorative iron frame that has supporting brackets on both the west and east faces. The gate is divided into two sections: the lower section features stick balusters, with each alternate baluster having a twisted section at its mid-point. The upper section includes a central decorative panel adorned with roses, rose leaves, inverted arises, and scrollwork. The frame mirrors this design, with the lower section repeating the pattern of the gate's lower part. The upper section of the frame and the horizontal section above the gate contain a central baluster with inverted arises and a rose at its mid-point, flanked by stick balusters that each have three twisted sections. At the top corners of the frame, there are scrolled floral motifs featuring a central rose and rose leaf detail.
