Description

The gates, gatepiers, and boundary walls date from 1824 and the 1850s, and form part of the Hewlett’s Reservoir complex. The structures are built of cast-iron, limestone, and red brick.

The gatepiers are in a Tudor Revival style, square in section, and approximately 2 metres high. They are constructed of ashlar and feature crested, pyramidal caps and inset traceried panels with cusping on each face. Between the gatepiers are heavy, cast-iron gates with pyramidal heads to the rails. The flanking brick boundary walls are approximately 2 metres high. To the left of the main gateway, there is a side gate with a Tudor-arched head, chamfered edges, and a ledged door secured with strap hinges. The left wall extends approximately 1.5 metres before turning northwards for around 220 metres, then turning eastwards for approximately 300 metres. The right-hand wall extends approximately 50 metres to the site corner, where it rounds and continues for a further 50 metres. Beyond this point, the boundary continues as a low wall with railings that have a plain, circular profile and are curved outwards at the top. Towards the north-eastern corner, the wall returns to its full height. A small section of the wall has been removed beyond the secondary entrance, but it then continues northwards, stepping downwards to reflect the site's slope. The brick is laid in an irregular header and stretcher bond and includes a high brick plinth. Regularly-spaced brick buttresses with offsets and coped tops are also incorporated into the walls.
