Description
Hilltown Farmhouse is a house that was formerly a farmhouse, dating from the late 17th century, with additions and alterations made in the 20th century. It features plastered stone rubble walls and a gable-ended slate roof. There are tall plastered stone rubble stacks at each gable end, with the left-hand stack projecting slightly. The original layout consisted of two rooms with a central passage, both rooms heated by gable end fireplaces. In the early 20th century, the passage was blocked at the rear by stairs, and in the mid-20th century, a rear addition was constructed. The house is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical four-window front, with two windows on the ground floor consisting of later 20th-century small-paned casements, and two-light windows on the first floor, with a three-light window on the ground floor. A 20th-century gabled porch is located at the center, featuring a part-glazed door. At the rear, there is a 20th-century flat-roofed two-storey addition, along with a 19th or 20th-century outbuilding extension at the right gable end. Inside, the fireplace in the left-hand room has had its lintel renewed and lowered but retains its original chamfered granite jambs. The fireplace in the right-hand room is similar but has a higher plain wooden lintel, which may also be a replacement. The feet of the roof trusses are not visible on the first floor and are unlikely to be original.
