Description

The Church of All Saints is a Grade II* listed building located on Vicarage Road. The church features a fine 15th-century west tower, while the remainder of the structure was rebuilt between 1842 and 1844 in the Perpendicular style by J. Hayward of Exeter.

The tall west tower is constructed of granite ashlar and consists of three stages, with thin set back buttresses, a moulded base, an embattled parapet, and pinnacles adorned with crockets. It includes three-light Perpendicular bell-openings and a west window featuring reticulated and intersecting tracery, along with a foiled frieze below. The west doorway is notable for its massive square dripmould and carved spandrels.

The rest of the church, built in 1842-1844, is made of coursed Delabole slate with granite dressings. The nave and chancel are combined, featuring a 5-light Perpendicular east window. The north and south aisles have embattled parapets and 5-light windows, with the north aisle also containing a polygonal stair turret. There is a north porch and a small north vestry situated at the angle of the aisle and chancel, as well as a south porch with another polygonal stair turret at the angle with the south aisle.

Inside, the church has granite arcades of five bays and retains the remains of an old stone reredos against the west wall of the south aisle. The south window features stained glass by Morris and Co from 1897 and another by Kempe from 1900. An inscribed stone can be found in the south porch. In the churchyard to the east, there are two tomb chests with inscribed stone tops dated 1648 and 1676. A path from the lychgate to the south porch is made up of small 17th-century gravestones inscribed with dates and initials.
