Description

Oakhay Cottage is a small house dating to around the late 16th century, with an 18th-century addition. The walls are of rendered cob, and the roof is thatched, gabled to the left end and hipped to the right and rear wing. A brick stack was rebuilt in the late 20th century at the right end, while the left gable end has an older brick stack. The house has a plan of two heated rooms at the front, each with an end stack, and an unheated rear wing. The front elevation is asymmetrical, with three windows. A small thatched roofed leanto is set against the left-hand side of the front, and this part of the house has 20th-century casement windows, including a similar window on the ground floor to the right. Other windows are 19th-century 2- and 3-light casements with pin hinges. A 20th-century porch with a hipped slate roof and glazed double doors is positioned centrally. A wing extends to the rear, behind the right-hand end of the main building. While the interior was inaccessible at the time of survey, it is believed to contain open fireplaces and exposed ceiling beams. Early roof timbers may also be present.
