Description

Bridhayes Cottage is a row of four cottages located in Bridestowe. The two central cottages likely date from the late 18th century, while the other two were probably built around the mid-19th century. The construction features local stone rubble walls, with areas of cob and slate hanging. The roofs are gabled and covered in slate, with differing heights, and the left-hand cottage has grouted areas. There is a chimney stack at each gable end, with two axial stacks present. The right-hand stack is rendered brick, while the others are built of rubble, the right one being rendered. Originally four separate cottages, the two on the right have been combined into a single dwelling. The two left-hand cottages likely possessed two rooms at the front, one larger than the other. The two central cottages probably had two rooms, one in the front and one in the back. The cottages are two stories high and have an asymmetrical facade with a 2:2:1:1 window arrangement. Most windows are small-paned, two-light casements from the 19th century, except for the right-hand cottage, which features hornless 16-pane sashes. A 20th-century plank door sits to the left of the right-hand cottage. The adjoining cottage to the left is recessed and has a 20th-century part-glazed door on the left. The next cottage to the left is also recessed, with an early 20th-century plank door slightly left of centre. The left-hand cottage has a wide porch with a hipped roof supported by granite columns, and a 20th-century part-glazed door behind it. The interiors of the cottages have not been inspected.
