Description

24 and 24A Fore Street is an inn, formerly known as the Royal Oak Inn, dating from 1714. The building has rendered walls and a hipped asbestos slate roof. It features two original brick axial stacks with moulded rims and a blind arch on each side, symmetrically placed.

The layout is a double depth plan with a central entrance hall that has stairs at the rear. On either side of the hall, there is one room at the front and one at the rear, with the front rooms heated by the axial stacks at the back. In the mid-19th century, an addition was made to the left-hand end of the building.

The inn is two storeys high with a symmetrical five-window front. It has a central pediment with a Diocletian window and two windows on the ground floor. All windows are horned late 19th-century sashes, with 18 panes in the first-floor windows and 20 panes in the ground-floor windows. There is probably an early 20th-century panelled door at the centre. To the left of the central first-floor window is a sundial dated 1714, and on the opposite side, a clock maintains the symmetry. The irregular 19th-century addition is located at the left end.

Inside, there are few visible 18th-century features, and the staircase is likely from the mid-19th century. However, in the left-hand front room, there is a 17th-century granite-framed fireplace that has presumably been reused.
