Description
The Bowling Green Pavilion, located approximately 100 metres south of Wood House, is a pavilion built between 1889 and 1905 by Thomas Mawson. Constructed from granite ashlar, it features a more rubbly texture on the lesser sides. The pavilion is designed in a simple classical style resembling a loggia and faces north-east, built across a hillslope and terraced into it.
It has a three-bay arcade with plain round-headed arches supported by square-section piers, which interrupt a drip course at impost level. The end wings project forward and feature similar round-headed arches in shallow square-headed recesses at each front end. These end arches lead to steps that rise over changing rooms at each end of the arcade. The top of the pavilion has a paved balcony with an open balustrade, featuring turned balusters that match those on the parapet over the hall of Wood House.
This pavilion is part of an extensive landscaping scheme designed by Mawson to accompany the rebuilding of Wood House, which Mawson regarded as one of his major achievements.
