Description
This is a footbridge located about 30 metres west of the chimney at Town Mill, dating from around the mid 19th century. It spans the River Okement and is designed as a narrow structure made of granite ashlar. The bridge features rock-faced voussoirs that form a single-span elliptical arch. It has chamfered granite coping and simple wrought-iron railings instead of traditional parapets. The footbridge provides a connection between the town centre and Town Mill, as well as Mill Road. The mill was enlarged in the mid 19th century by William Wood, who also established a manure and vitriol works, likely prompting the construction of this footbridge.
