Description
The Chapel of St James is a Grade II* listed building located on Fore Street. It features a 15th-century west tower and a nave and chancel that were rebuilt in 1862. The west tower is constructed of dressed granite and consists of three stages, with setback buttresses and a polygonal stair turret on the northeast, topped with battlements. It has an embattled parapet and obelisk pinnacles, along with bell openings that contain two 4-centred arch lights. The west window is three-light with reticulated tracery, situated above a moulded doorway with a 2-centre arch.
The Victorian nave and chancel are built from Delabole slate with granite dressings and feature a slate roof. The south side has plain cusped lancets, with a two-light window, while the east window is three-light with interjecting glazing bars. Inside, there is a blocked three-bay north arcade supported by octagonal granite piers. A small 19th-century wooden gallery is located at the west end. The pulpit and reader's desk are made from carved woodwork dating from the 16th or 17th century. There are also old bench ends and fragments of tracery, likely from a screen, on the south wall, as well as reused 18th-century twisted balusters in the late 19th-century altar rail.
