Description

The building at Palmer’s Norley is a farmhouse dating to approximately the mid-17th century, with a 20th-century addition to the rear. It is constructed of plastered rubble and cob walls, with a thatched gable roof. A projecting plastered rubble stack with a brick shaft stands at the left gable end, and a brick stack is located at the right-hand end. Originally with a two-room plan, possibly incorporating a passage, the farmhouse now features an entrance lobby and staircase at the centre. Both original rooms had fireplaces. A two-story, asymmetrical facade, dating to the early to mid-20th century, displays a mix of early to mid-20th century two-light casement windows, along with a 19th-century porch and a smaller 20th-century French window. A thatched porch with a plank door is situated to the right of the centre. Inside the right-hand room, there is a chamfered cross beam with unstopped ends. An open fireplace is present, featuring a chamfered, straight-cut wooden lintel with stopped ends, and moulded granite jambs – only the lower half of the left-hand jamb survives. The left-hand fireplace has been blocked. The roof structure, visible on the first floor, appears to be from the late 18th or 19th century, exhibiting insubstantial straight principals.
